Mounds students enjoy new school
Two years ago the elementary school in Mounds was destroyed by fire.
Now students are getting to enjoy a brand new building.
Crews finished installing lockers Monday and Thursday, November 5th, the school will be open to the public from 4:30-6pm for an open house.
October 20th, 2007 is a day folks in Mounds will never forget.
"By the time I got there I could see flames coming through all the windows and the roof." said Assistant Superintendent and Elementary Principal, Yvette Britt.
Fire investigators ruled the cause of the fire an electrical problem. Now the same place the fire started is a brand new media center, something students at Mounds have never had before.
"It's a lot better than the portables i can tell you that much." said 4th grader Connor McNabb.
"I love this place i am going to stay here forever!" said 3rd grader, Gillian Shore.
The new school consists of 15 classrooms. A brand new gymnasium and new computer lab which doubles as a safe room.
Each classroom is equipped with updated technology including smart boards.
"I like the smart boards... you can go up there and move stuff around." said McNabb.
With the new building, the school is able to offer after school programs for students and hope to offer night classes for adults later this year.
"It's a cinderella story for us all. We've come from burning ashes to a brand new building." said Principal Britt.
A $2.5 million school bond is on the November 10th ballot.
With the money, school officials would like to update other facilities on campus.
